Despite losing the season opener at Elkton 64-28 last Thursday night, Rising Sun girls basketball coach Kathy Stoudt is not discouraged. Far from it.
First-year Perryville girls basketball coach Amanda Wolfe says her team learned some valuable lessons in a season-opening 63-26 loss to perennial power Aberdeen Tuesday night, December 5.
After an unanticipated loss to Havre de Grace last week, the Perryville girls basketball team was after a win. The Panthers downed Tri-State Christian Academy at home 41-10 on February 13. "We just got off a tough loss against Havre de Grace and it really wasn't expected of us. So we came out here knowing that we needed a win in order to get back up in the division to get our wins up to hopefully get that home court advantage for our playoffs," said guard Aubrey Hill. Bo Manor Eagles soared to a 53-24 victory over Rising Sun at home on February 10. The Eagles controlled the game from the start, leading by 16 at the end of the half. "Our transition points were excellent. We were getting steals and we were out for the races, scoring our points," said Bo Manor head coach Jazmen White. "We didn't play with as much confidence as we have in the past couple of weeks and they are a very talented team," said Rising Sun head coach Kathy Stoudt. Elkton girls basketball team got off to a slow start in its 53-40 win over Tome on January 30. The Titans and the Elks were tied at 11 points at the end of the first period. In the second, Elkton's Ty Segure and Vanessa Dunn both scored three pointers. Courtney Hardy added two baskets giving the Elks a seven point lead at half-time. "We were losing our composure at one point and we just got it together and started playing as a team," said point guard Segure. Perryville girls basketball were in it to win it. The Panthers defeated Rising Sun at home 49-26 last Thursday. Perryville took control of the game leading by 13 at the end of the half. "They were kind of lingering around at 13 points and they (Rising Sun) had just hit a three and we try to remind them that a couple of threes and we're right back in this," said Perryville head coach Mike Blizzard. "They controlled the board in the first half. They are definitely a very talented team. We did not match up well with them," said Rising Sun head coach Kathy Stoudt. North East girls basketball team downed visiting Rising Sun 44-33 on Tuesday night, January 10. "We are getting better every week. Today we played together as a team and everyone contributed," said North East head coach Chris Hadjis. "We were behind a little bit but we were able to comeback and they showed another great effort." In the beginning it seemed as though the Tigers were in it to win it but when North East's top scorer, Janiya Bibbons came onto the court, things changed. "She is really athletic, she was killing us on the board, in the paint. Even when she didn't get a rebound she was jumping up and tapping the ball out and she really hurt us," said Rising Sun head coach Kathy Stoudt. The Indians struggled with Rising Sun's defense but were able to change the pace and scored 19 points in the first half. After a slow start to the season and only winning two games before the Green-N-Gold tournament. North East head coach Chris Hadjis said it felt like Christmas all over again, when his team won. North East battled Tome in the tournament at Cecil College on December 27. North East topped Tome with a score of 36-28. He credited the Indians' success to the fact that they are playing as a team and many of their injured players are back. The Elks didn't take a break over the Christmas holiday, capturing a win over Bo Manor in girls basketball. Elkton defeated the Eagles 55-35 on December 27 during the Green-N-Gold tournament at Cecil College. "We laid an egg with C.M. Wright last week and the girls learned from that. I was really happy with how they prepared for this game. They were fully prepared," said Elkton head coach Chris Dunn. The Elks practiced hard for the tournament and used some new strategies. "Our offense against their zone that was something different that we put in this game and it worked really well," said Dunn. |
